This situation is getting so much attention. I don't think the Falcons were trying to be smarter than everyone and redo the system. I think they saw what they felt was a generational talent (4 teams tried to move up to get him!) and decided to make a move. Both of these guys have had major injuries, so it makes sense to be an insurance policy for the other, if that makes sense.

Are you all insane? Look no TE is a day one starter and kicks ass. They all need to transition and take 1-2 years to truly develop. Also Bowers is only 6'3" compared to true TE's who are 6'5" and out way Bowers by 30 to 40 pounds. He is not a Kelcy. or Kittle. He is a WR who play's TE. No matter how you try to sugar coat this it was a stupid pick when you have no franchise QB to throw to him. The propaganda they try to put on this dumb pick is crazy. How much were they paid to make this crap up. Look this guy will demand top dollar from day one without ever earning it simply because of his draft position. He will demand Kelcy money on his first resigning if he makes it that far. Stupid pick when you have no QB. Minshew and O'Connell are backups on 31 other teams. Vastly disappointed by Fiorio and Simms here ! I can easily understand this move. Actually it seems to cover all the scenarios : Planning for the worst : Check ! : Cousins recovery hits a wall or he is injured again during the season : the Falcons will have a promising back-up in place. (How many times did we hear Florio /Simms lambasts team which didn't/couldn't get a deep QB room ? Jeez be consistent with yourself guys !) Planning for the best : Check ! Cousins is fine, plays like he played last year before getting injured in Minnesota. Expected result : great regular seasons records. So for the next two years, low level picks you can't use to get top market QB prospects. Cousins is 36, he is probably gone in 2 or 3 years tops : so, with not draft his potential replacement RIGHT NOW with THIS YEAR high pick, rather than having to find a "bridge QB"; suck (again!) a year or two, or five, before drafting a good prospect ? The crop of new QB is not always great.... As for having Penix stay on the bench for a couple of seasons, well, Jordan Love 's three years on the bench didn't turn out too bad, right ? So why wouldn't it work for Falcons with Penix ? Downsides : purely speculative !! I don't believe for a second that a guy like Cousins feel threatened by a rookie whose ability to immediately fill the position at Cousins level of play is highly improbable. And as for the "locker room ", give the players some credit please ! They are pros, they can be expected to know that a few bombs thrown at practice doesn't translate into starting level QB play on Syndays ! The ONLY serious argument against the move would be that in taking Penix, the Falcons passed on the opportunity to bulk up their roster. Yet it is the one strangely missing from the borderline unhinged rant we got from Florio and Simms here. I don't know what bit them but this is a baaad segment from andusually much more savvy pair of pundits.

Considering Raiders needed another receiver, Mayer had issues staying healthy but also plays as a traditional TE, Bowers will be a completely new dynamic for the offense. Not to mention he’s a decent blocker who can help in 12 personnel if need be. Can’t wait for the season and we got so much time!!

I disagree that they where in a scramble mode….I think they ran so many simulations that they where prepared if all the QBs where gone even if Atlanta doesn’t draft Penix Giants could of drafted a QB. They where prepared.
